Apple has entered the foldable-phone market with the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The device combines a compact outer screen with a much larger inner display and introduces a version of iOS designed around folding, multitasking and two-screen use.
For Indian buyers, the biggest surprise may be the price. Apple says the iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 for the 256GB model, putting it well above the price of a conventional flagship iPhone.
What is the iPhone Duo?
Apple’s official specifications describe a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. When closed, the phone works like a compact iPhone. Open it and the larger screen is intended for video, reading, gaming and multitasking.
Apple has also focused heavily on the hinge, display continuity and software. The company says content scales proportionally between the two displays, while iOS adds features designed specifically for the foldable format.
iPhone Duo price and availability in India
Apple says the iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India and will be sold in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options.
Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on October 16, with availability starting October 23. Apple says the device will ship with iOS 27.1.
That pricing clearly makes the Duo a premium, specialised product rather than a mainstream replacement for every iPhone user.
Why the software matters as much as the fold
Apple’s advantage may not be simply making a phone that folds. The larger question is how well iOS and third-party apps use the larger screen.
Apple says the Duo supports new multitasking features, including opening two apps side by side. The company has also highlighted apps such as Netflix, Zoom and Slack as examples of software adapting to the foldable design.
The Verge has argued that the Duo’s strongest differentiator may be software integration rather than completely new foldable hardware. That is important because Samsung, Google, Huawei and other manufacturers already have years of experience in the category.
A20 Pro brings flagship performance
The iPhone Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip, the same chip family used in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Apple says the device also includes an advanced thermal system designed to maintain performance during demanding workloads such as gaming, multitasking and on-device AI.
This matters because a foldable is expected to do more than basic phone tasks. A larger display encourages users to keep multiple apps open, watch longer video sessions and perform more tablet-like work.
Who should consider the iPhone Duo?
The Duo makes the most sense for users who specifically value a larger screen in a device that can still fold into a smaller shape. It could appeal to people who frequently read documents, work across multiple apps, watch video or want a single device that sits somewhere between an iPhone and a small tablet.
It is harder to justify for buyers who mainly want a great camera, long battery life and everyday iPhone features. At nearly ₹3 lakh before accessories or protection plans, the foldable design itself needs to be a major part of the buying decision.
The real test starts after launch
Apple has strong control over both iPhone hardware and iOS, but foldables also depend heavily on durability, app support and how useful the larger display feels after the novelty wears off.
That makes the iPhone Duo one of Apple’s most interesting products in years — but also one buyers may want to understand carefully before ordering.
