Apple is set to release iOS 27 on September 14, bringing Siri AI, new Apple Intelligence features, design changes and performance improvements to compatible iPhones. If you plan to install it on day one, a few checks can reduce the chance of losing data or running into avoidable update problems.
The update itself is free, but not every iPhone will get every AI feature. Apple says iOS 27 runs on the same iPhone models as iOS 26, while Apple Intelligence and Siri AI require newer hardware.
Back up your iPhone before installing iOS 27
The most important step is to create a fresh backup. Apple specifically recommends backing up before a software update, either with iCloud or a computer.
For an iCloud backup, open Settings, tap your name, choose iCloud, then iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi until the backup finishes, and check the date and time of the latest successful backup before continuing.
A backup matters because major iOS updates change system files and settings. Problems are uncommon, but having a recent copy of your photos, messages, app data and device settings gives you a recovery option if something goes wrong.
Check whether your iPhone supports iOS 27 and Siri AI
iOS 27 supports the iPhone 11 series and newer models, along with the iPhone SE second generation and later. That means many older iPhones can install the operating system even if they cannot use every Apple Intelligence feature.
Apple says Apple Intelligence and Siri AI on iPhone require an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 and later. Siri AI will initially roll out in beta for supported devices set to English, with additional languages following later.
If your main reason for updating is Siri AI, check your device model and language before expecting the feature to appear immediately after installation.
Make enough storage space available
Before update day, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and check how much free space you have. Apple does not publish one universal storage requirement for every iOS update because the download and installation space can vary by device.
If your iPhone needs extra room, iOS may offer to temporarily remove apps and reinstall them after the update. You can also delete downloaded video, unused apps or other large files yourself before starting.
Use Wi-Fi, power and the normal Software Update menu
Apple’s standard wireless update process requires your iPhone to be connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into power. When iOS 27 becomes available, go to Settings > General > Software Update and choose Download and Install.
Do not worry if the update does not appear at exactly the same moment for everyone. Large Apple software launches can create heavy server demand, and availability can sometimes take time to show on individual devices.
Do you need to install iOS 27 immediately?
No. Installing on release day gives you the newest features sooner, but waiting a short time can be sensible if your iPhone is essential for work, travel or business apps.
Users who depend on specialist apps should check that their important apps support iOS 27. Waiting for early user feedback can also help identify compatibility issues that were not obvious during beta testing.
What to expect after the update
After installation, give the iPhone time to finish background tasks such as indexing photos, files and search data. Temporary warmth or increased battery use immediately after a major update does not automatically mean there is a long-term battery problem.
iOS 27 arrives on September 14, so the best preparation is simple: make a fresh backup, confirm device and Siri AI compatibility, free some storage, connect to reliable Wi-Fi and avoid updating at a time when you urgently need your phone.
