
Apple’s new A20 Pro chip is one of the most important upgrades inside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo (The foldable iPhone). It moves Apple’s flagship iPhone silicon to a 2-nanometre process and puts more emphasis on graphics, sustained performance and on-device AI.
Apple says A20 Pro includes a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The company also claims 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro, giving the chip more room for demanding graphics and AI workloads.
Why the 2nm process matters
A smaller manufacturing process can allow chip designers to fit more transistors into a given area and improve the balance between performance and power efficiency. The result is not automatically faster real-world performance in every task, but it gives Apple more flexibility in how it designs the CPU, GPU and AI hardware.
For buyers, the important question is not simply “2nm versus 3nm.” What matters is whether the new architecture improves everyday performance, battery efficiency and sustained speed under heavier workloads.
A20 Pro puts more focus on on-device AI
Apple says the new Dual 16-core Neural Engine has 32 total cores and provides up to twice the AI processing power of A19 Pro. It is designed to accelerate on-device AI models and computational photography. So for the AI tasks this will blow your mind and those waiting for the MacBook Neo should buy the second version of the Neo in 2027, which will feature the Apple A20 Pro chip.
That is increasingly important as Apple moves more intelligence directly onto the iPhone. Local processing can reduce reliance on cloud servers for some tasks and can improve response time and privacy when features are designed to run on-device.
The company is also giving the CPU integrated Neural Accelerators, showing that AI performance is no longer limited to a single dedicated block inside the chip.
Graphics and memory get major upgrades
According to Apple, A20 Pro’s 7-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro, while memory bandwidth increases by 50 percent. Those are manufacturer claims, so independent benchmarks will still be important before treating the percentages as real-world gains across every app or game.
Higher memory bandwidth can help when large amounts of data need to move quickly between processing units, which is useful for graphics, photography and AI workloads.
Apple also changed the thermal design
Raw speed is only useful if the phone can maintain it. Apple has redesigned the chip packaging and connected A20 Pro more directly to a next-generation vapour chamber.
Apple says the new cooling system has roughly three times more surface area than the previous generation and enables substantially higher sustained performance. That should matter most during longer gaming sessions, video work and heavier AI processing, where heat can reduce performance over time.
What does A20 Pro mean for normal iPhone users?
For everyday tasks such as messaging, browsing and social media, recent iPhones are already fast. The A20 Pro upgrade is more relevant for users who keep their phones for several years or regularly use demanding features such as high-end games, advanced camera processing and newer Apple Intelligence functions.
It may also give Apple more headroom for future iOS features. A chip with stronger AI and graphics capability can support software that does not yet exist at launch.
Should you upgrade only for the chip?
Probably not. A processor is only one part of the buying decision. Camera changes, battery life, display features, price and the age of your current iPhone matter just as much.
But A20 Pro is a meaningful platform upgrade. The move to 2nm, stronger GPU, higher memory bandwidth and expanded Neural Engine show where Apple is taking the iPhone: more local AI, more sustained performance and a closer relationship between silicon and software.
